At Floor Coverings International of Carmel, we help Carmel families find the perfect hardwood flooring for their Hoosier home. Hardwood happens to be one of the most versatile and diverse flooring types, with hundreds of species, styles, and finishes to choose from. Plank flooring is a variety of hardwood that has seen a recent resurgence in popularity. Read on for more information about this “wider” hardwood option:
What is Plank?
Generally, plank refers to hardwood that is wider than three inches but thinner than six inches. Wide plank hardwood is greater than six inches in width and strip hardwood is thinner than threes inches. Since the turn of the century, strip hardwood has been the most common, but prior to the mass manufacturing of hardwood, plank hardwood was found in most homes. This is because wood was sourced from local forests and wider planks are a more efficient use of each tree.
Considerations for Plank
Plank hardwood can be produced more efficiently than strip, however, most of the key differences come down to looks. Here are a few things to consider when choosing plank:
- Hardwood species: the species of hardwood you choose should be a large factor in determining your hardwood width. Busier woods almost always look better in plank. Hickory, for example, is almost exclusively found in plank and wide plank due to its dramatic shifts in color and tone. Simple, subtle woods like white oak and birch work in plank or strip.
- Design Goals: depending on the application, plank can shift the look and feel of a space. Most often, plank will make your spaces feel more trendy and modern. This makes it a great choice for Carmel homeowners that are cultivating a contemporary aesthetic.
