Carpeting is more popular than ever. At Floor Coverings International Carmel, our customers love its warm, soft feel underfoot, as well as its versatility. We know that choosing just one carpet can be daunting. Here are some things to consider when searching for the perfect new carpet:

Choosing a Style

After you choose carpeting for your new floor, the next step is to decide on a style. Carpets can be broken down into two main categories: loop pile and cut pile.

Loop Pile

Carpet is manufactured by weaving yarn—made from a natural material, such as wool, or a synthetic material like nylon or polyester—in and out of a backing material. What results are rows and rows of loops. Loop pile carpeting leaves these loops intact, leading to a strong, durable carpet. Loop pile carpets are excellent choices for high-traffic rooms of the house and commercial spaces. Berber is an example of a popular loop pile carpet.

Cut Pile

Cut pile carpeting is made in much the same way as loop, except there is one added step: the loops are cut into strands. This leads to a softer, more comfortable carpet, perfect for bedrooms and family rooms. There are many types of cut pile, including saxony, plush, and frieze. These cut pile subtypes are differentiated by their height and level of twist.

Picking a Color

What stumps Zionsville homeowners most is choosing a color for their new carpet. Picking colors for any room is simple when you remember the numbers sixty, thirty, and ten. Many prominent designers abide by the 60-30-10 rule because it ensures a balanced aesthetic. In this design paradigm, sixty percent of a room’s design elements should be one color, thirty percent a secondary color, and ten percent should serve as an accent color. In most rooms, the walls and floors take up the most space and embody the primary color. Couches and other large furniture account for the secondary color. A throw rug is an excellent way to use carpeting to accent a space.

What’s Your Timeline?

Most Zionsville homeowners replace their carpet every seven to eight years. If you fall into that category, it’s important to choose a color and style that will stand the test of time. Homeowners who change their carpeting more frequently often feel empowered to make bolder choices with their color palette.
